Different types of woods have very different benefits and price points. If you are considering a wood fence, choosing the right type of wood is a very important decision!
The pine pickets are pressure-treated to protect against rot and decay using EPA-approved, safe for environment and pets, MCA (Micronized Copper Azole). Southern yellow pines typically have very wide growth rings and thick dense latewood compared to cedar increasing its likelihood to warp, twist from the rapid expansion and contraction caused but the inconsistency rate these different parts of the wood absorb and release water. These characteristics make these types of board the least appealing to the eye as it starts to weather.

Additional cost to consider upfront is the application of the first staining within two weeks of install and then again every few years depending on the product. Cedar has natural tannins, making it resistant to insects, rot, and decay. It is also an all-natural product, making it even safer for family and pets. Cedar also has a more consistent grain structure allowing it to absorb and release water more uniformly, thus less susceptible to warping and twisting. Easy to paint and stain or can be left to age naturally and develop a beautiful patina.

Learn More About Our Lifetime Warranty on Wood FencesWood is a lot like a sponge. It naturally absorbs water. But wood doesn't absorb water evenly. That's because some areas of wood contain higher amounts of sap than others, and sap prevents water absorption.
As wood absorbs water, it swells, and because of differences in sap concentrations, it does so unevenly across the panel. As the wood dries out, it shrinks, again unevenly. Over time, this uneven swelling and shrinking causes the wood to cup, curl, warp, buckle and split.
A new wood fence should have a UV protectant water repellent type stain applied within two weeks of installation if possible to protect the wood from absorbing water. This is true for all types of wood, including pressure treated wood, which only protects against rotting.
Stains come in clear, traditional wood tones, and a variety of colors to coordinate with your home. MR. FENCE can do the task for you, so you can spend your time enjoying your new fence.

For both pressure treated and cedar fences, we use pressure treated wood for the posts and rails. For pressure treated wood fences, we use pressure treated wood for the pickets. This type of wood will absorb and evaporate water at a very inconsistant rate, which can cause warping, cracking and twisting. Staining and sealing can help this, but not prevent it. Cedar pickets are more stable in our Evansville Indiana environment, so it is less prone to warping, splitting, and cracking, however, it will eventually rot. We recommend staining and sealing your new cedar fence within two weeks of installation to help prevent this.
A wood fence has natural characteristics and beauty that most people love to look at. Wood also warps, cracks, checks, splits and rots - sometimes excessively and not what you expected. Vinyl fencing is clean, neat, and true with a lifetime warranty and will stay looking like the original install for many many years. Wood fencing needs to be stained, sealed and protected within two weeks, which can be costly. This will need to be repeated every 3 to 4 years. The cost breakeven point is in about 5 to 7 years. If you have your wood fence any longer than that, it actually is more expensive than a vinyl fence.
When installing wood fences, vinyl fences, aluminum fences, and chain link fences, we use our own Mr. Fence formulation of concrete that allows us to get better compaction in the footer to prevent frost heave. This procedure reduces the likelihood of frost heave caused by the freezing and thawing of the ground during seasonal changes. The concrete will be completely set in a week or two.
It depends on several items. We are very fast and efficient. Most residential projects are completed in one day with our unique installation techniques. We use a dry pack post setting method, using our own proprietary mix, enabling us to set our posts and build our fence in the same day.
